2019 Artist in Residence Science Mural Project

The 2019 Artist in Residence Science Mural Project was an open tender contract to supply:

  • Residency time with the DES scientists from Science and Technology Division based at the Ecosciences Precinct and the students and teacher at Dutton Park State School equivalent to five days over five weeks and the presentation of agreed mural concepts during National Science Week in August 2019
  • Completion of the agreed murals at Dutton Park State School and participation in the launch event at the school
  • Mural along a noise abatement barrier separating the school playground from a main railway line.

The successful artist was Benjamin Werner from All City Walls – a Brisbane arts services company specialising in painting large murals. The mural was completed with funding support from Brisbane City Councillor for the Gabba Ward, Cr Jonathan Sri; Dutton Park State School; the South Brisbane Electoral Office. Mr Werner and his business partner Mr Yannick Blattner contributed considerable extra time to complete the full-scale 16-panel mural.

The mural represents a new generation of life exploding in the forest and on the reef. Entitled ‘Chromo Luminarism’ the mural mimics the excitement of the students of Dutton Park State School as they all helped create this artwork—their energetic participation contributing greatly to the outcome. Inspired by the vital research undertaken at the Ecosciences Precinct, the artwork draws together the symbiotic relationship between science and art.
