Chemistry science in Government

Queensland government chemists undertake sophisticated testing, complex analysis, collaborate and provide trusted advice for the benefit of the community, environment and the economy.

  • The Research and Scientific at Queensland Fire and Emergency Services responds to emergency incidents involving hazardous materials. They also provide expert advice on mitigation, toxicology and personal protective equipment selection.

  • The Chemical Residue Laboratory detects antibiotic and pesticide residues in meat, fruit and vegetables and provides a cattle-dip testing service.

  • Forensic and Scientific Services at Queensland Health analyse food and beverages for harmful pathogens, toxins and contaminants, perform environmental tests to identify contaminants and pollutants, and their sources and conducting diagnostic investigation of pesticides in wildlife mortalities.

  • The Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ) in the Department of Resources collects and provides geoscience data, information and advice on Queensland's mineral and energy resources, and resource potential.

  • The Chemistry Centre at the Department of Environment and Science provides analytical chemistry services to inform research and decision making in natural resources, water quality, environmental and agricultural management.
