QWMN Strategic focus

    Research, Development and Innovation

    Queensland Water Modelling Network (QWMN) projects address priority modelling needs identified through consultation with modelling groups within government, external partners and consultants documented in the QWMN Research, Development and Innovation Strategy.

    The original QWMN Research, Development and Innovation Strategy 2018–2020 (PDF, 1.4MB) identified priority models and four geographical regions; and set out government research, development and innovation priority actions across four broad research domains.

    In 2021, following extensive consultation across the sector, the QWMN RDI Strategy was updated to cover the period 2021-2024. The priority regions and RDI topics identified in the 2021–2024 RDI Strategy (PDF, 3.6MB) broadly align with those of the original strategy, helping to maintain and build momentum. The new Strategy will help inform future effort and investment including the design of the QWMN’s annual strategic RDI tender call.

    Capability

    In addition to investment in research, development and innovation, the QWMN is committed to building capability in Queensland’s water modelling sector. The QWMN has contracted a consortium to deliver a Capability, Collaboration and Capacity Program (3CP) through a range of services that will:

    • Enhance the capabilities of individual water modelling and use professionals and their employing organisations, and in doing so;
    • Strengthen the strategic capacity of the knowledge production systems that are responsible for developing and using water models, and;
    • Build capacity for modelling that is optimally designed to inform water related decision-making within Queensland

    The work of the 3CP follows on from the work of the External Engagement Program (EEP), which operated from 2018 to 2021. 3CP Consortium members include Griffith University (International Water Centre and Australian Rivers Institute), Queensland University of Technology, University of Queensland, Australian Institute of Marine Science, BMT, Aurecon, Water Technology, Alluvium, E2DesignLab, Deltares, Thoughts Drawn Out and eWater.

    Governance

    The Department of Environment and Science is responsible for the coordination and governance of the QWMN, with key links across government, research and industry. The QWMN’s governance structure includes an Advisory Board, Capability and Capacity Reference Group and a Secretariat. The expertise of subject matter specialists aligning with the Research, Development and Innovation program is utilised on an as needs basis to support the governance groups and procurement activities.

    The QWMN Advisory Board comprises nine members that contribute a broad range of perspectives. It is responsible for providing advice on emerging issues, contributing ideas and expertise, and acting as champions for the communication and translation of QWMN outputs and outcomes. Its members will be reviewed on an annual basis to ensure alignment with the QWMN’s strategic direction.
