Our relationship with Germany

Queensland enjoys long-standing trade, economic, business, education and cultural links with Germany, highlighted by more than 700 German academics, researchers and students, currently based in Queensland.

Continuing to strengthen relationships is important to us. We are working to build more strategic knowledge-based partnerships with Germany’s world-leading institutions such as Fraunhofer, BMW, Rheinmetall and the German Space Agency. Partnerships range from science and innovation to entrepreneurship, research translation and commercialisation.

Our collaborations continue to grow, encouraged by initiatives such as inter-country science missions and partnership support.

Queensland welcomed the German Chancellor Angela Merkel for G20 Brisbane gathering of world leaders in 2014.

Our strategic science relationships—such as the Joint Declaration of Intent for Cooperation in Bioeconomy (PDF, 91.3KB) (2022), signed with the German Federal Minister of Education and Research; and the 2018 Accord (PDF, 640.0KB) signed with the then President of the German Bundesrat and Governing Mayor of Berlin— pave the way for experts from Queensland and Germany to collaborate in research, industry, healthcare and the circular economy.

On a national level, Australia and Germany have strong research ties to address global challenges together. The Germany Embassy in Australia formed  the “Australia-Germany Research Network” in 2018 and in 2021 the Australian and German governments announced the Australia-Germany Hydrogen Accord.
