Atlantic Philanthropies

Queensland’s world-class research institutes have been a major beneficiary of Chuck Feeney's The Atlantic Philanthropies. For over 30 years, the philanthropic foundation made substantial grants available to a number of regions throughout the world including Queensland, and especially, The University of Queensland (UQ), QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and the Queensland University of Technology.

Support from Atlantic Philanthropies saw the establishment of a number of major research institutes, such as the Translational Research Institute, Queensland Brain Institute and the Centre for Clinical Research. Mr. Feeney’s generous support for this infrastructure has made potentially lifesaving research possible, including development of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, co-invented by Ian Frazer and Jian Zhou.

Since 2005 the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have provided over US$83M in grants for almost 50 research projects to Queensland universities and organisations in research areas such as malaria, agricultural development and most recently for sharing clinical outcome data from COVID treated patients.
