MIRI is a health service-led translational research and innovation centre, collaborating with a range of external partners, to lead cutting edge research and innovation with the aim of improving health care for our regional communities. The Institute supports programs of health research in local and regional priority areas (occupational Health and Safety, rural models of care, workforce redesign, service innovation, sexual health, mental health, obesity, substance abuse and skin cancer) and facilitates research implementation through clinical trial capacity, academic support and research governance processes. The MIRI, co-located with James Cook University, is based within a 163 bedded regional hospital in northern Queensland, servicing a population of around 180,424. The institute has access to patients within a variety of specialties (medical, surgical, emergency, obstetrics, paediatrics, specialist outpatient clinics, mental health, critical care and clinical support services).
